South Korea’s Low Birthrate: New Government Measures Announced
An infographic highlighting South Korea's response to demographic challenges: support for families with three or more children, discounted highway tolls, and expanded care services for the elderly.
South Korea is facing a critical challenge as one of the countries with the world’s lowest birthrates. Recognizing this, the South Korean government unveiled new measures on January 23 to address the issue and prepare for the challenges of a rapidly aging population.
A key highlight of these measures is the enhanced benefits for families with three or more children. These households will receive a 20% discount on highway tolls during weekends and public holidays. Additionally, the government plans to expand a policy granting children from multi-child families priority enrollment in general high schools nationwide.
The response to aging is also a major focus. South Korea, already classified as a super-aged society, is expanding its customized care services for the elderly. Previously limited to vulnerable groups, these services will now be available to all senior citizens. The scope of support will also broaden to include hospital accompaniment and meal/nutrition management.
These policies reflect the government’s commitment to tackling South Korea’s demographic challenges. By incentivizing higher birthrates and improving elderly care, the country is working to adapt to its shifting population dynamics and ensure sustainable social and economic growth.
